The Deep

“I was worshipping this morning and you came to mind.” The text from one of my oldest and dearest friends read. She continued, “deep cries out to deep is what I heard.” She included these verses.

Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;
         All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.

The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime;
         And His song will be with me in the night,
         A prayer to the God of my life.

I will say to God my rock, “Why have You forgotten me?
         Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”

As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries revile me,
         While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

Why are you in despair, O my soul?
         And why have you become disturbed within me?
         Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
         The help of my countenance and my God.

My immediate response was, “Nailed it!” I told her that I had been praying for another friend and it’s as if I can feel their mourning. I can feel the oppression of the enemy against them (being an empath only enhances the depth of feeling).

And His song will be with me in the night.

Psalm 42:8b

Literally, there has been one song on repeat in my mind for days, maybe even weeks. I cannot get enough of this song and I listen to it on full-tilt many times throughout the day. It’s a worship song about never giving up, even when we think we’re finished, when faith isn’t what it use to be-not to give up. There is always hope.

Digging deeper, can you sense what is happening here? God called me to pray for another. This has been exhausting-in a good way. Frankly, the person being prayed for doesn’t even know! Yet, God in His lovingkindness, spoke to a friend of longstanding, whom I trust. This friend cultivates a deep, intimate, and consistent relationship with God and I choose to allow her to speak into my life. While I am upholding someone through prayer, my friend is upholding me.

THIS is how the Bride is meant to move, to flow, to care for each other. You know what is coming next…when we love each other the world will know we belong to Him.

How much stronger I feel to fight on knowing God has my back through the prayers of a friend.

Shalom!
