Grief

Grief is a fickle character. It is not loyal and definitely plays with emotions. Simultaneously leaving one be and suddenly, there grief is, out of hiding once more.

Many of us connect grief with the loss of a loved one or important relationship. My parents passed within three months of each other, and our nephew-seventeen at the time-passed three months later. While it has been almost 20 years, and I no longer experience gut-wrenching grief, grief still shows up. It’s more subtle, but there are days when I just want to lay my head in my sweet momma’s lap, and feel her presence as she gently strokes my hair.

Last year we had some extended house guests, and as quickly as we fell into a new normal, it was time for them to leave. I was unprepared for the grief that I experienced. So much, I switched the furniture in the two rooms our guests had occupied. Somehow this small visual and physical change helped my brain to overcome the grief I felt stuck in.

We have another house guest who has been here much longer, and they are moving on. Guess what came marching in uninvited and unannounced? I was explaining to our guest, that I suddenly realized how I deal with certain grief, and said, “There isn’t much I can do to change your room around.” (The rooms are staged because we are selling our home). “But, I can go to Maui!” And this is exactly what I’m going to do! The fact that I will be with my sweet husband and celebrating my birthday while there, well, this is a blessing indeed.
